The Ondo State Police Command has arrested four police officers captured in a viral social media video allegedly making unprofessional and ethnically insensitive remarks to a member of the public during a stop-and-search operation along the Lagos–Benin Expressway.
Addressing journalists in Akure on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the officers had been identified and taken into custody on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Felix Ohagwu.
The officers were identified as AP/No. 207454 ASP Elomore Sodayo, AP/No. 332012 Inspector Adefila Adewale, AP/No. 332449 Inspector Olorunfemi Opeyemi, and AP/No. 332369 Inspector Odusola Peter.
Jimoh disclosed that the Commissioner of Police had ordered a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the level of culpability of each of the officers involved.
He stressed that the Nigeria Police Force remains a disciplined and professional institution that does not tolerate misconduct, incivility, or actions capable of eroding public confidence, promoting ethnic division, or bringing the Force into disrepute.
According to him, police officers are expected at all times to conduct themselves professionally, respect the dignity of every citizen, and strictly adhere to the Force’s Code of Conduct and Standard Operating Procedures.
The police spokesman assured the public that the investigation would be conducted with fairness, transparency, and accountability, adding that any officer found to have violated the ethics and standards of the Force would face appropriate disciplinary action in line with established procedures and the law.
Reaffirming the Command’s commitment to intelligence-driven and community-oriented policing, Jimoh urged residents to remain law-abiding and continue supporting the police by reporting incidents of misconduct through the appropriate complaint channels.
He also encouraged members of the public to contact the Command through its official complaint lines and social media platforms for inquiries and reports.
